Hole In The Head Disease Hexamita
The flagellate protozoan, Hexamita, is usually involved. (This is also known as Octomitus). Various factors, such as overcrowding, low oxygen levels, unhygienic conditions, changes in temperature and poor diet, may cause the parasites to multiply and then develop the acute symptoms. |
loss of appetite Avoidance of other fish Sluggish movement (Lethargic) Holes (lesions) in the head Ulceration of the lateral line Yellow/cheesy strings of mucus trailing from the lesions |
Even though this is a disease of the digestive tract, it often manifests itself as ulcerations in the head and/or lateral line. Discus and other large cichlids like angelfish and especially Oscars, are especially prone to Hexamita. As it is a disease of the digestive tract, a wasting away or loss of appetite may be experienced. Untreated cases can eventually prove disfiguring or fatal. |
